Summer Blooms…Hydrangeas

My favorite summer flower has to be Hydrangeas. I love them outside in the yard…

I love clipping them and bringing them inside too…

Now for the bad news…I have several large Hydrangea shrubs in my own yard and although they are very healthy plants…they don’t produce any blooms!

I actually got lucky this year and did get a few flowers on one of the plants…

weak!

I am so disappointed! I am not a master gardener by any means…but I am able to grow beautiful blooms as proven by my Iris garden shared in this post

image

So…what I am doing wrong?? I have looked up several websites on Hydrangea care and tried several remedies…feeding, pruning tips, etc. Still, little to no luck…

Do you have Hydrangeas in your yard? Do you have some secret tips for producing the beautiful blooms?

Please share!!

Bathroom Reveal #2 & #3…

As mentioned last Friday in my Guest Bath reveal – seen here – today I want to share more pictures and info on the two additional bathroom remodels we have completed.

First the upstairs hall bath – or The Boys Bathroom…

image

This bathroom looked a lot different when we moved in. As I mentioned in my previous post, these remodels were started and completed before my blogging days so I do not have before pictures and progress photos on file. I will just have to tell you all the “gory” details! This bath started with a single sink vanity and had a half wall in between the vanity and toilet.

I found a picture of a vanity that I liked in a Pottery Barn catalog and had this one custom made to match. Remember our friend Steve that I mentioned in this post? Steve is an incredibly talented carpenter and has a full wood shop in his garage. I showed him the picture and he built this vanity by hand…

To quote my friends…”Everyone needs a Steve!”

I decided to add a second sink since we have two boys sharing this bathroom and we had the space. I used square sinks from American Standard and continued the square motif in the faucets, and hardware…

image

An easy way to add more style to standard white 12x12 tile is to offset them in a brick pattern like I did above. We decided to keep the tub and shower stall since it was in good condition and simply added sliding doors, again repeating the square pattern…

New lighting, paint, and few fun accessories and this bath remodel is complete…

Here is what this bathroom usually looks like - and did 5 minutes before I started taking picutres…

Keeping it real shot!

Moving on to our Powder Room. This 1/2 bath was added by the previous owners when they did the bonus room addition…

image

It is a small space with the sink on one side and the toilet on the opposite wall. Again, it looked a lot different. Think small single sink vanity with a Formica top, and carpet around the toilet. Yes….I said carpet around the toilet…yikes! No wonder this remodel was at the top of my list…

image

We used leftover travertine from the Guest Bath on the floor. To add more style I purchased some tumbled travertine tiles in a subway pattern and used it as a border around the tile…

image

I have always loved the look of this doube leg pedestal sink and was so happy to be able to use it in this space…

image

I think it looks great with the white bead board we installed…

Paint Color - Sherwin Williams-Chivalry Copper #6353

I pulled this pumpkin paint color from a tone in the tumbled travertine border and painted the walls and ceiling of this small space. Although I like the bright color in here, I am currently considering adding wallpaper in a bold pattern…what do you think?

I wish I could remember the resources for all the bathrooms…but I was just so busy and happy to have them done I did not keep a detailed list back then. I do remember finding the mirror, glass shelf, towel ring, and t.p. holder/magazine rack at Restoration Hardware.

image

Believe it or not…we still have one more bathroom to remodel. The master bath has not been touched yet. We have been planning on an entire master bedroom remodel and decided to wait and include the bath when we get there…if we ever get there!

Have you remodeled your bathrooms? Where did you get your inspiration BP – before Pinterest??

Bathroom Reveal #1…the guest bath

After working on Mimi’s bathroom plans earlier this week, and finding this link party over at Thrifty Décor Chick featuring bathrooms, I thought it was time to share my three remodeled bathrooms in my own home!

When we moved into this home almost 9 years ago, the first thing on the list was to remodel ALL of the bathrooms. Now, I must fill you in on a little back round…up to this point, we had only lived in new homes…so we had never done a remodel on anything! Even though this is our 6th house…this would be our very 1st remodeling project.

That said, this was way BB (before blogging) and also way, way, way BP (before Pinterest) so unfortunately I do not have any decent “before” pictures. All I can share are the “after” shots I took yesterday…

Downstairs Hall Bath

Here is a picture of our main downstairs bathroom that doubles as our guest bath. When we moved into this house this bathroom was much different. We removed a wall with a pocket door that separated the sink area from the shower and toilet. This opened up the room and allowed us to make a bigger shower stall.

image

I designed the vanity to look like a free standing piece of furniture. I am lucky to have a friend who owns her own kitchen and bath design studio – Kitchens of Diablo – and Shelley was great! We had a lot of fun working together.

I went with a solid granite top for the vanity and oil rubbed bronze fixtures…

image

image

I chose travertine tiles for the floor and the shower stall walls, with a twisted rope trim piece to coordinate with the details on the cabinetry…

Over the toilet I have a favorite piece of art, that is also very sentimental…

image

This wall hanging was hand made by my mother and father right after they got married. They did not have a lot of money to use for decorating, and if you follow my blog you know that my mom (aka Mimi) is very crafty – see this post – so they created this by gluing in each and every rock, pebble, gemstone, sequin, and different colored cording by hand…

image

I just love it! It is a little quirky and certainly unique…and it fits perfectly in this spot.

image

As I think about it…this remodel was completed almost 8yrs ago…and I still like the way it looks. I would consider that a successful first project!
